New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge

Efficient bus route

Team: 17

School: Centennial High

Area of Science: environmental

Interim: Interim Report

Problem Definition: Local school bus routes seem random, and our observations have shown us that there may be more efficient routes. With the price of gas ever-increasing, using an inefficient bus route wastes money and also harms the environment. This money could go to other, more important uses and decreasing environmental impact is an added benefit.
Problem Solution: We are going to take a bus route from Centennial High School and use statistical information and computer modeling to find a more efficient route, thus saving the district money and helping the environment.
Progress to Date: Right now we are awaiting a response from the director of transportation in Las Cruces Public Schools for the information we need, such as the miles per gallon of each school bus, the amount of money spent on gas per bus, and how much of the transportation budget goes toward fuel for buses. We will then begin the production of our model. We have begun working with basic modeling concepts and have received an email from an expert. Our next step is to complete our research and create our model of the bus route that we are working with.
Expected Results: We expect, at the end of our project, to have found a more efficient route for our selected bus routes and to submit this information to the district.
