Interim: Problem definition:
Sensors in intersections are important tools for traffic light control and coordination. These sensors are part of complex systems that are intended to aid in traffic flow and pedestrian safety. The goal of this project is to model the effectiveness of an alternative to road sensors that would be more simple, effective, and efficient than the current system. In current systems sensors are installed under the pavement where a car would stop at a red light. When these sensors detect the presence of a car it will change the light to green.

Problem Solution:
For this project we will be using Traffic Grid, a program written in NetLogo and available to users. Using the original Traffic Grid as our constant, we will then modify a separate program using Traffic Grid to create a more efficient traffic light system. We will do this by changing the current Traffic Grid program, which is timed, to a motion sensor. In other words, the program will detect a car approaching traffic so that it will change from red to green before the car has to stop. We will then compare these two programs to see which is more efficient and effective.

Progress to Date:
So far, we have reviewed the functions for the device that was previously used as Police ALERT in order to understand and identify the immediate changes that need to take place for our project. In regards to the programming, we are currently simulating cars driving through an intersection. We are able to manually change the amount of traffic going through the intersection and change the color of the lights. The next step in the programming aspect of the project will be to have the cars stop when the lights are red, and automate the light changing system. After the light system is automated we will then begin comparing the two systems of changing lights to determine which system would be more efficient in a rural environment.

Expected Results:
After altering and testing, the original traffic grid program we are hoping our modified version will be more efficient and a plausible real world solution to rural traffic inefficiency. If this is successful, we hope to translate our findings and program to another project in which we will be creating an actual traffic sensor device.
